Should I cut Drywall and blow in insulation?
My basement is a little chilly at times. I noticed for walls that are out facing to the outside with the cement there is no insulation. Would you go to the trouble of cutting a piece of drywall in between each stud which is about 35 of them , and blow insulation down there, or just go with a fireplace to heat it. Would the insulation make much of a difference? our basement is in illinois and underground.
There is a relatively new product on the market that can be applied without doing too much damage to the drywall. It is a larger scale application of the expanding foam that is used in window installations.
They just did it on This Old House this season. The holes left behind were actually fairly small and did not seem like the requisite patch would be anything more than a piece of mesh tape and some joint compound. My understanding is that it has a higher R value per inch than fiberglass insulation so it would make quite a difference.
Because you are underground you may have some water issues and the foam is better in damp situations than other materials.
Fireplaces are nice but you are really just covering up the problem and not correcting it if you go that rout.
Good luck!
