Need help with transition from woodwind to brass?
I want to major in music in college and want to know how to play both brass and woodwind, right now I play clarinet, saxaphone, bassoon, guitar, piano and oboe, all at an advanced level. I got a french horn and found out that itis very hard, i understand for brass u "buzz" your lips, any other tips? It would be nice if another woodwind player could tell me how they switched to brass to relate easier. I'v been finding this transition to be hell.
Since you have been playing woodwinds for so long, it is going to be very difficult - to the point where I say, choose one of the other
With horn you buzz your lips, on top of that you need to make sure:
1. You are not playing into your body (face the bell out, not towards your stomach)
2. You sit up straight, lead with your chest, open your throat to increase air intake
3. Do not move you shoulders when breathing in, use your lower chest and abdomen
4. When playing use a lot of air, even in quieter passages, overall it will be easier to produce a good sound, to center notes, and not to chip notes if you have a good steady airstream
5. Start with practicing long tones and slowly (over a few weeks) stretching your range; after a few months (8-12 ish) of intense playing or a couple years of lighter or moderate playing you should be able to play at least a pedal F up to a high C or D
6. learn the alternate fingerings, they will help a lot, especially with intonation
7. Patience is key, you cannot expect a lot from a horn right away, because if you do, you can create a bad embouchure and what not, thus making it so later on you have to go back and basically start over
8. Dont' call it a french horn, it is seriously only called 'horn'
If you want it to be much easier then it is now, try starting on trumpet and playing that for a few months before really getting into horn, it will make you a much stronger hornist faster.
