Looking for a new catfish rod?
I lost my rod and reel yesterday when a catfish pulled it in the water so I need to get a new setup. I need some ideas on a rod that is 7-8 feet long, medium/heavy action, baitcasting, stiff (for shore casting) and obviously strong enough for big fish. My last setup was a 7 foot medium-heavy action ugly stick lite with an Abu Garcia Black Max. This worked well for me but the rod was a little too flexible for long casts from the bank. I would like to stick to Ugly Stiks since they are cheap and ultra strong because I will be spending about $100 on a new round reel. Looking for a rod no more than $60.
And if you have any suggestions for a good round reel. I am looking into Abu Garcia Ambassadeurs.
Also, do the Ugly Stik Catfish rods come in baitcasting models or just spinning??
Check into the Shakespeare Ugly Stik Catfish rods. I've heard nothing but good things about these rods, and they would be perfect if your not fishing over 3oz or 4oz of weight. You may want the 8' MH for longer casting distances, but if you don't think you need a rod that long you can opt for the 7' MH. These are only $30, same price as the original Ugly Stik's and $10 cheaper than the Ugly Stik Lite's.
Your absolutely correct with reel choice, the Abu Garcia Ambassadeurs are the staple in which other catfishing reels are compared to. Just stay away from the cheaply, China-made BCX and KALEX models. Stick with a C3 or if you want a higher gear ratio, a C4. These are excellent reels and are extremely durable. The C3-6500 has a bait clicker and a lot of catfishermen use them and love them. It allows line to freely come off of the spool even when the reel is engaged and it also makes a loud sound to warn you that line is being peeled off. Not sure if the C4-6600 has one or not.
So I'd go C3-6500 ($90) and 7' or 8' MH Ugly Stik Catfish ($30).
