Having opened its doors to the sporting world more than a decade ago, the stunning Madejski Stadium has managed to become one of Reading's most prestigious and beloved sporting venues. As the designated headquarters of the Reading Football Club, the grounds had an ominous opening by none other than the Duchess of Gloucester herself in late 1998 although its first game was played earlier when the home team defeated Luton Town, 3-0. Named after Reading Football Club chairman John Madejski and constructed at the cost of 50 million pounds, the stadium also plays host to the last leg of the Reading Half Marathon as well as the London Irish and rugby union club games. Conveniently located near the M4 motorway, the stadium is an all-seater sports complex with the capacity to host 24,161 spectators at a time. The playing pitch in Madejski Stadium is equally impressive with its natural grass and synthetic fibre composition which cost over 750,000 pounds. Owing to its bowl shaped seating plan, every inch of the stadium affords an unobstructed view of the pitch and the game for spectators. Renowned for its wheelchair accessible facilities the stadium also secured an award for its easy mobility and seating options for the disabled. The North Stand has a total of 39 wheelchair spaces with 4946 seats as a whole. The South Stand where visiting team fans typically sit houses 4350 seats while the eastern stand has 7286 seats complete with 28 wheelchair enabled spaces. One of the stadium's giant video screens is also located here. The two tiered West Stand contains the executive boxes as well as the complex's dugouts and tunnel. As a premier Reading sporting venue, the Madejski Stadium also serves as a popular setting for pop concerts.
