Eight Fantatsic Tips To Help You Become The Next Great Snooker Player
Your Grip:
Your grip on the snooker cue will vary from player to player, ultimately it will depend on what your comfortable with. The most common grip is to have a relaxed, loose hand until the moment of impact this allows for smoother snooker cue action and should improve accuracy.
Your Stance:
People under estimate the importance of the stance. Having the correct stance can mean the difference between a clean strike on the cue ball and sending it in the intended direction and missing every other pot or directional strike.
Again a lot will depend on what your comfortable with, but the main fundamental rules should be:
- your feet spread evenly pointing towards ten past nine on a clock.
- Your backside should be pushed out with the snooker cue running alongside your chest with your body almost sideways on.
- Remember to be behind the snooker cue as much as possible to achieve a straight viewing angle.
Following these basic idea will set you up to having a good stance position and will help you with a straight snooker cue action.
Snooker Cue Action
The cue action is one of the most important aspects of any cue sport. The snooker cue should run smoothly along your bridging hand, sliding back and forth with as little friction as possible in an even manner. Theoretically the snooker cue should remain as close to level as possible at all times whilst cueing up and your back cueing arm should be at a right angle. Sometimes called the piston effect the cue action should replicate a piston arm moving back and forth like a well oiled piece of machinery.
Strategise:
At first this will seem difficult as you will be homing your skills mainly on potting and striking the cue ball correctly, but as you progress you will learn where the cue ball will stop and which angles it will travel in allowing you to tactically strategise and plan your next move. It is often said that the professional scan plan as much as five shots ahead. But as you can imagine this is only at an extremely high skill level. I would recommend just practising for now and it will come with time.
Chalk:
Always remember to chalk your snooker cue, run the chalk towards a corner of the chalks surface, if your snooker cue has been being chalked correctly, a star shape should develop on the surface. Chalk will stop your cue tip from sliding when striking the cue ball and make a smoother connection.
The Correct Cue Choice:
The correct snooker cue choice is imperative, a snooker cue that is too heavy, too long, too short or too light will definitely hinder your ability to play at your best, you need a cue that's just right. To find the correct height snooker cue for you stand the cue directly at the side of your body, if the tip is level with the ball of your shoulder, you can be confident the cue is at least the correct size. In terms of weight this is generally upon preference, try both heavy cues and light to test your cue action and ability to slide the snooker cue cleanly and in a straight line. Too light a cue will mean you will try to strike the cue ball to hard taking your cue off course, too heavy and the arm becomes lazy lapsing on control.
Relax:
The more relaxed your body is, the more fluent a line and arm action you will achieve, helping to keep your snooker cue to continue travelling in a straight line, meaning the shot you take will be the intended one.
Follow The Masters:
My last tip is follow the masters, watch as much professional cue sports as possible. Watch how they play, how they stand, how they cue up. Watching these professional sportsmen will continually give you hints and tips on how to improve your game, after all they spend around 8 – 10 hours a day practising and there isn't much they have not tried and tested.
