Pool Tables Tips and Advice
The most important part of a pool table is obviously the surface, and to keep this in great condition so the pool balls can roll on it as they should, you have to maintain it properly. Get a brush designed for brushing pool tables, and remember to brush your table consistently. When you brush your table felt, be sure to always work in one direction from one end to the other. Another thing you don't want to do is brush your table using any kind of circular motion. If you have a new table, then in the first several or three months it is recommended to brush your table more often than you would an older table.
Top quality pool tables use slate for the table bed; other materials may be used in lower priced tables. The requirements for professional (WPA) tournament play are tables with slate beds that one inch thick, or greater. A professional pool table must also conform to other specifications, such as the flatness, or tolerance of the bed.
Pool tables with slate beds that are under an inch thick are, of course, sold for casual and home use. Some of the less expensive tables can have beds made from wood and other materials.
Slate can be found in several parts of the world, but Brazil and Italy are where most of the slate used in pool tables originates from. There are benefits to both the harder Brazilian slate and the softer Italian variety, the latter offering more flexibility and being easier to use. But a table made from hard Brazilian slate is likely to last longer. Hard slate is extremely hardy and a table made from this material can last a lifetime. Slate from Brazil used in table beds whose thickness is 1" or greater are practically indestructible.
Brazilian slate is also beneficial for creating a tight tolerance, or flat surface that makes for better play.
If you're going to buy a pool table you should take your time and one that's just right. With so many types of pool tables to choose from, you want to be sure that you make the right choice. Of course you may have to operate within a budget, but that is not a problem. You can find a high quality pool table that will meet your budget requirements and still offer all the features and benefits necessary for a great playing experience.
