Due to the curvy nature of black people's hair, the sebaceous glands under the skin cannot release sebum through the hair follicle to keep the scalp moisturized and protect the hair shaft from breaking. With the lack of sebum on the scalp and along the hair shaft, this creates a dry scalp and dry, brittle hair susceptible to breakage. In order to grow black hair long, this dry hair and scalp needs to be addressed.
Black hair is actually the most fragile and the problem of extreme dryness is further exacerbated by poor habits such as exposure to harsh chemicals, heated styling tools such as hot combs, flat irons, blow dryers, etc. Exposure to the sun and wind can also dry out the tresses.
In order to grow black hair long and healthy, good hair care habits need to be adopted. If you are looking for tips on how to grow black hair, the following are a few habits you can adopt that will help you to create healthy black hair.

1. Excessive shampooing can dry the tresses which means that if you have dry hair and scalp, you do not need to shampoo as often. When you do shampoo, use a gentle, conditioning shampoo. Also try to find a shampoo that states that it is pH balanced which means that it is more acidic which works the best for dry hair. Shampoos that are more alkaline than acidic are very drying and are not recommended for dry hair.
2. Dry tresses air very fragile which means that when you shampoo, use a gentle hand. This is not the time to detangle the hair. Use your finger tips and not your fingernails which will only irritate your scalp.
3. Make sure that you use various conditioners to help moisturize the hair and scalp. Moisturized hair will lead to less breakage and will help you to grow black hair long and healthy. There are various conditioners that you can use such as instant conditioners that are only kept on the hair for a few minutes and then rinsed. There are also deep conditioners that are kept on for longer in order to deeply penetrate the hair shaft. Last but not least, there are hot oil treatments that also penetrate the hair shaft to repair damaged cuticles and add shine.
An easy at home deep conditioner is to use traditional mayonnaise to deeply condition dry tresses. One of the ingredients in mayonnaise is egg which contains a protein which is similar to a type of protein found in hair. Mayonnaise will help to add shine and body to dry tresses. Do not use diet mayonnaise or other modified or you will not obtain the full benefits. Shampoo the hair and then apply as much mayonnaise as needed to coat each strand of hair and cover with a shower cap or plastic bag and leave on for at least 30 minutes. Shampoo and rinse thoroughly.
4. Do not brush dry hair too much as it is very fragile so forget about the 100 strokes at night as this is only damaging and will not allow you to grow healthy and long tresses.
