Would this loophole/glitch in the system work?
My XBox 360 Live Gold Membership is expiring next month. I was about to renew it, but I realized my gamer tag wasn't that great, and I wanted to change it. I remember if you change a gamertag on a non-live gamertag in your system, it doesn't cost Microsoft points. If I let my Live membership expire, change my gamertag when it doesn't have Live, then renew the subscription, would the system let me? I really never thought so, as it is a simple glitch to patch, but I'm giving it a shot.

When your Gold expires, you still have a Xbox Live account, it's just a Silver account. And you still have to pay to change the name on a Silver account. There isn't a way to make an account that's on Xbox Live to totally loose it's status as an Xbox Live account. Even unplugging your system from Xbox Live wouldn't change that the account is an Xbox Live account.
Edit: Silver can't play online at all except for the rare weekends that Microsoft allows that (the last one that I know of was the weekend following the release of MW2). Silver is more about allowing access to downloads and messaging; it's basically a taste of what Xbox Live has to offer, while Gold is the full amount.
