Has Anyone Body Clipped a Horse With Hair Clippers?
I need to get my mare clipped for portraits, but can't afford good horse clippers. I work at Marshalls and saw a pair of human hair clippers for 11 bucks. Should I try it? Or is it an automatic fail?
I bought these for $90 http://www.wahl.com.au/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=41&Itemid=42
I only used them once to do a full clip on my friends hairy horse. It took 2 days to clip because they heated up and I also had training to do so I couldn't spend the whole day on it, but other than that, they were fantastic. They worked better than the Wahl Show Pro pet clippers my friend bought.
I probably wouldn't go with the $11 ones though. I would have a look around at some good brands and see what you can afford out of that.
We've used Remington human hair clippers to do the same super hairy horse and they held out til we finished clipping.
Just be careful to give them a rest regularly so they don't overheat and it should be alright.
Edit: Don't forget to give your horse a thorough bath. Get a curry comb and really scrub to make sure you get all the dirt out of the coat. After your horse has fully dried, give them a really good grooming before you even think about bringing out the clippers. Even a good set of clippers can go blunt after a few minutes if the horse is dirty.
