uconn or franklin and marshall?
I live in CT and I don't know if I want to go to a school so close to home. But, UConn has really great sport teams and a lot of school spirit that I'm not sure F&M has. At the same time, F&M has a great psych program (I'm not sure about UConn) and I can also sing if I go there. I don't know if I'll be able to sing at UConn if I don't want to major in voice. I don't know anything much about the social scene at F&M, but I know that Uconn parties can rage. Would a degree from Uconn be more, less or equal in terms of value in comparison to a degree from F&M? Also, based on the info I gave, which do you find better? Any info is helpful! Thanks!
Although F&M has tougher admission standards and is mega-expensive, I think as a CT resident you should take advantage of what UConn has to offer. In-state you get an excellent tuition rate.
UConn is more well known than F&M - by far. I am certain the degree from UConn would be more valuable than F&M...that is, unless you were interviewing with a F&M alum or someone with specific knowledge of the school. It's really not one of the schools you have on the tip of your tongue when discussing colleges and universities.
Also, you shouldn't write off UConn because it is so close to home - you may one day come to the realization that it is actually a benefit.
I'd be very certain that there are choirs you can participate in without being a voice major - just like there are bands you can play in without being a music major.
Also, as a psych major, there's a good probability you're going to want to go on to graduate studies. You can go anywhere for that - even F&M...however, for graduate school, you'll be qualified for stipends, assistantships, and other forms of tuition waiver that wouldn't necessarily be available as an undergrad.
Consider that the cost difference over 4 years undergrad between UConn and F&M will be over $100,000. I think this is one of the most important items to consider in your decision. Most high school seniors don't readily consider cost, but you really do need to. Is the degree from F&M really going to be that much more valuable over your career? Consider $100,000 at 5% interest over 50 years will be worth over $1.1 million. So, if I say you can go to UConn, and in 50 years have $1.1 million guaranteed, or go to F&M and come out with the same degree, do you think the F&M degree will add $20,000 a year to your salary? I personally don't think so. Additionally, when you come out of F&M, with loans (assuming you can't pay full tuition and fees out of pocket) you're going to be saddled with monthly loan payments for quite some time. Wouldn't it be nice to come out of school with no debts?
I think UConn is the better choice, not necessarily based on the info you gave, but in general.
