Would red clay stick to foam balls?
Im trying to make something that would fit over a human head in ceramic clay, and I was thinking about using a foam craft ball. Is that a bad idea, or should I use something else? I wanted to find a fake head, but I dont know where I would get that :/
if you want to make sure it won't stick, wrap your foam ball in plastic. You will have to remove the foam ball and the plastic from your object before you can fire it in the kiln.
Not only is your teacher unlikely to burn the plastic in the kiln (might leave a mess at least in carbon) even more importantly the clay will shrink when drying, whereas the plastic won't - which will most likely leading to your clay object cracking. So remove the plastic inside when your clay is in the leatherhard stage. You will have to cut it in at least 2 pieces and fix the cut with slip.
When you make something which will fit over your head make sure you make it a bit too large. As said before, the clay will shrink when drying, but also when fired. If you want to be on the safe side add 10%.
