What makes high end road bikes worth the money?
I just got home from a week long cross state bike ride. My bike is an entry level KHS Flite 300, which performed well during the trip. Obviously I was surrounded by a lot of higher end bikes, Treks, Cannondales, Specializeds, etc.
While I am interested in upgrading, I'm not sure what the extra money is really going to deliver in terms of ride quality and performance. I'd like to hear from others who have been in this situation and what their experiences have been. Maybe I'd be better off buying upgraded components for what I already have?

The best way to find out is to go out and test ride a few of your next potential 'rides'.
There is a tremendous difference between a $400 bike and a $1500 bike. Not very much between a $2,000 bike and a $5,000 bike. The main difference at the lower levels is just better components and the biggest difference is in the wheel set. A good wheel set is like magic they coast, ride, and pedal soooo much faster and smoother. There may be some frame upgrade, say from steel to aluminum at the lower level. It may be much lighter, but a much more rigid ride.
When you get above $2,000 the differences are ever smoother, even slightly so, components.... but, mainly in frame materials. You get into carbon and titanium frames.... there are now wood frames too! So all at once you can get caught up in the gimmicks, the chase for the lightest and newest, It is an ever changing pursuit... now it is electrical shifters! Too cool!
Upgrading usually costs much, much, more than just buying new. IF you were happy with your bike, and wanted to make just one worthwhile upgrade, make that with a better quality wheel set. I did that with a Cannondale that I truly loved. I kept the bike for several more years before I bought a new bike. But the wheels set taught me what I might be missing....
Go for the demo rides and find out for yourself. Not just a spind around the the parking lot ... a real demo ride... they will let you! Doesn't cost a thing AND may say you thousands!
