For any speed in the aircraft's designed speed range there is one power setting that will allow the airplane to maintain a constant altitude.
When the pilot picks a power setting and maintains altitude the airplane will settle on one speed.
When the pilot picks an airspeed and maintains altitude he will have to adjust the throttle until he gets the correct power setting to maintain constant speed and altitude.
The pilot controls the angle of attack which controls the lift coefficient by controlling the aircraft's elevators. The pilot knows how to adjust the elevator by watching the altimeter and the airspeed indicator. If the altitude is steady and the aircraft is operating at the wrong speed the pilot adjusts the power up or down to get the speed he wants. The elevator must be adjusted again with changes in power in order to maintain the desired altitude.
It's all a complex interactive series of adjustments that a pilot quickly learns to accomplish with about the same effort that's required to keep a car travelling in the correct lane at the correct speed.
