how could one create the perfect shaft with out buying a $300 ob-2 or predator Z-2?
didnt plan on making it myself maybe i should have been more specific master cue maker dave bowman (house pro at the home of the US open 9 ball championship in virginia beach is only 10 min up the street from my house) i was more concerned with the stiffness and deflection caused by vibration on an 11.75mm shaft made of aaa canadian hard rock maple thats nearly 8 years old since made and came from a 40 year old tree. thanks
The key to the perfect shaft is not trying to find a different material, it's about finding the best possible piece of maple and having a highly skilled cuemaker turn it into the perfect shaft. A cuemaker I know (who commands thousands of dollars for his most basic shafts and $300 just for a shaft) spends countless hours sifting through every piece of wood at dozens of lumberyards just to find a handful of pieces of wood to make shafts out of. And even then, some of those shafts end up on the trash heap because the end result does not meet his high standards.
If you don't want to spend $300 on a shaft, the next best thing would be to somehow find a perfect piece of maple, preferably from a 100+ year old tree with no imperfections in the grain, and taking it to a custom cuemaker (and no, you cannot make a 'perfect' shaft yourself, even if you're a master carpenter) to build a great shaft. He probably won't charge you more than $150, and may even do it for less if he can get more than one shaft out of the wood and you let him keep them.
