What's the difference between using a "sheetrock" type backerboard and a concrete board?
If I'm tiling over a plywood sub floor or even a tub surround, does it matter if I use a concrete board or a fiber board like Fiberock?
I should add, I work at a flooring retailer and I've never been trained on exactly which product to recommend to the customers.
Our store carries both Fiberock and C-Cure Cement Backerboard. Usually I explain to my customers that they both do the same thing and the difference is just whatever material they feel comfortable with using. I'll explain that Fiberock can hold moisture and possibly swell, but Concrete Board won't do that. Concrete Board on the other hand is messy to work with and crumbles, whereas Fiberock cuts cleaner, is less messy and can be easier to work with.
Any additional feedback or advice for me?
Thanks!
Concrete board doesn't hold moisture, so it should be used anywhere that it may come into contact with water, such as behind a tile shower surround (as opposed to behind a one-piece acrylic surround). Frankly, anytime you are tiling in a wet area, the concrete backer board is best, but the ease of using the other types sometimes outweighs the durability of concrete.
