what makes a expensive pool stick better than a cheap one?
I'm shopping for a new pool cue and i keep seeing all these cue's for high dollar.what makes a $500.00 cue worth $500.00...i think I'm getting a athena cue
well I'm not going to pay $500.00 for a cue, I was just wondering why are they so much : )
High dollar cues most certainly shoot better than cheap cues. Every single person who's ever taken a shot with one of my Predator cues after shooting with their crap cue could immediately tell the difference. I let a member of my pool team borrow one of my cues for a match once. He is a middle of the road player who doesn't do anything particularly well, and in that one match with no practice with my cue he missed half as many shots as he normally does and dominated a player he normally played pretty even.
When someone (who knows what they are talking about, anyway) says that a more expensive cue does not play better than a cheaper one, that only applies to within the same brand. A $150 McDermott cue does not play better than a $500 McDermott cue. They come out of the same factory and are made to the same standard, the $500 just has a more elaborate build or more exotic woods.
But within different manufacturers, there is a certainly a difference. Most cheap cues come off of an assembly line is China and are put together with cheap materials by unskilled labor. More expensive cues tend to be made in the US by skilled craftsman with better materials. More expensive cues also tend to be made by people who really know pool, and know how a cue should hit. At the highest end of the custom cue spectrum, you'll have people who spend an enormous amount of time and money picking out the highest quality wood, spending months or even years treating than wood, and then holding themselves to the highest standards of build quality. The end result of this is typically a more solidly built cue that has better feel and is more consistent. A cheaply build cue will react differently from shot to shot, and depending on how the shaft is turned in relation to the cue ball. A high quality cue with better shaft wood will be more consistent and feel the same every time you take a shot. Because of this, they are more reliable in the long run and can help a person (in general) develop a better game.
At the other side of the high dollar cues is the "high tech" category. Some people will say that this doesn't matter. Those people don't know what they're talking about. A cue like Predator (or a number of other cues) have scientific evidence that their cue is more accurate than a standard built cue. It is NOT an opinion that they play better, it is a scientific fact. These cues are build for "low deflection," which basically means when you hit the cue ball off-center, it will travel more consistent with your intended aim line. The end result is a cue that is more tolerant to miss hits and bad strokes, and will thereby be more accurate.
Now, you can certainly shoot a great game of pool with a cheaper cue. Many people have done it. But just like most other things, you typically get what you pay for with cues. More money means better quality and often times a more accurate cue.
